The magic of the Pinewood Derby is undiminished ! A crowd of 550 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Leaders , parents and friends packed into the sports hall at Churcher's College to watch the racing and view all the entries in the Design and Finish categories. A total of 194 cars were entered.

Racing was very tight ; so tight that even with electronic timing to 1/1000 second, one race had to be re-run to resolve a dead heat. Each car raced in 3 heats with the fastest 12 going forward to the semi-finals, and the top 6 to the final for either Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers or Leaders. The fastest 3 cars from each category (minus the Leaders) then progressed to the Grand Prix semi finals and Grand Prix Final to find the fastest car of the night. This year that honour went to Beaver Scout Matthew Stapleton with car number 16.

Before the racing started, the 9 sections of the Design and Finish awards were judged by a panel of experts. The standard and diversity of entries was very high this year, and the Chief Judge, Mary West complimented the boys on their efforts.

The event was attended by the mayor of Petersfield, Hilary Ayer, and her escort Bob Ayer, who chatted to lots of the boys and admired their cars.

Prizes were presented by Adam Jollans, Hampshire County Commissioner, Phil Cook, Petersfield District Commissioner, and George Pickup, Petersfield Scout Fellowship President.

The event was organised by Petersfield Scout Fellowship, lead by Malcolm Peaty.

Following the event Malcom Peaty thanked all those people, around 45 adults, who had again joined in to make the event a resounding success. Thanks also to White Rose Petersfield, and to Travis Perkins for their support.
